Last Friday I went on a day trip to Marathon, Lavrion, and Sounion. We didn't stop to see much in Marathon except for the Tumulus, which is a tomb of 192 dead Athenians, (yes, it's the picture of the hill...). Then we went to Lavrion where we saw Thorikos, the ancient theater. In Lavrion we also saw the Silver and Bronze mines, which are the canyon looking pictures. People were obsessed with the mines and because the holes had to be very narrow, they used children to work the mines. Child slavery.... Anyways then we went to Sounion where we saw the Temple of Poseidon . The Temple is on a cape and surrounded by the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea which meant that if you controlled the cape, you controlled both seas. This was very valuable for import and export. But, this also made the temple a target of control resulting in the destruction of the temple.
