Hello - γειά σου

What's up? It's my junior year of college and I am lucky enough to go abroad to, yup you guessed it, Greece. This blog is mainly for friends and family because we all know you love to creep. Anyways, keep in touch, creep all you want, and enjoy!

I Know I'm a Fat Ass

So the following pictures are solely of food.  Pretty big staples in my diet are pasta and omlettes....
I put peppers in it...because that's all I had

First Omlette I have ever made

Attempt at sauteing tomatoes, peppers and onions

Added pasta to the pan
Final product....which I may or may not have just inhaled in a matter of five minutes.

So yes, I am a fat ass, I love food.  Anyways to let you in on my life, today I had a museums field trip for my art class.  We saw three different exhibits.  We saw the National Gallery, the Deste Prize Exhibit (which is biennial and my art teacher is the winner of the 2009 Deste Prize), and we also saw the Last Grand Tour Exhibit, which was a little disappointing.  To start the day off, we were all supposed to meet in front of the Gallery, so of course I go to the wrong art exhibit of the three we saw today and walked around for 40 minutes wondering where the hell everyone was....then walking my stupid ass to the actual Gallery we were supposed to meet at while having a panic attack, fantastic start I know.  The Gallery had some pretty cool paintings although we only looked at certain works, I wish we had more time to explore the four floors.  We only saw select painting on two floors.  After the Gallery we went to a cafe on Arcadia's expense, I got a latte cappucino with cinnamon and honey and extra milk.  It was pretty good besides the fact that any sort of caffeine makes me really sick and tired.  We then went to the Deste Prize exhibit which was definitely my favorite.  It was only 5 contemporary pieces.  None of which were paintings that you would normally see in a museum or gallery.  For example one artist created an entirely new wood floor with a door hidden in it, another had a stripper pole in the center of the room with mirrors on the wall (lipstick stained lip marks in one spot) with ongoing sketches of pole dancing moves playing on a tv.  A boombox and case of CDs was displayed on the floor.  Some very interesting interactive pieces some of which were very nonsensical.  The final exhibit (The Last Grand Tour) was an independent visit, where our teacher left and we are required to analyze the works and then write a paper on the themes etc.  This exhibit was disappointing to me because there were a few works that were legitimately scribbles with a pen that a toddler could have done, and the artist claims that the work is related to Greek Mythology, i say BULLSHIT!  There were just some really abstract claims of connections to Greece, that to me was unsatisfying.  But, there were a few pieces that I did enjoy, like a group of paintings of "the city".  These consisted of gray and blue lines, no actual figures, but it really gave a feeling of city and traffic....and dirt because Athens has to be the dirtiest city on the face of this planet.  That was the end of my art exploration, thankfully because normally we are supposed to have Fridays off.  Maybe in future posts I will put some links to the art work because my descriptions will not do the works justice.

On another note, there have been quite a few strikes here lately.  Yesterday and today there were public transportation strikes, which may carry into Monday and Tuesday.  Many students had classes cancelled because their teachers could not make into class....of course none of mine were cancelled, just my luck.  Anyway, these strikes prevented the cleaning lady from coming to my apartment, but thankfully she came today.  The apartment is definitely cleaner but she moved random things around.   Like we reorganized our kitchen and moved shit tons of tables, ALL of which she moved back! Like why would you even do that?  Also I had six empty 1.5 liter water bottles lined up in my room for possible reuse, ALL of which she THREW AWAY! Don't touch my shit woman! She also like rearranged my bulletin board, I really don't understand this woman's concept of cleaning.  On  a sidenote, my Greek Language teacher brought us in this really interesting thing that Greeks eat when its hot, its basically tree sap and sugar.  You take a spoonful and put it in a cold glass of water and slowly enjoy. Very interesting...maybe I'll bring some back to the States.

Last night a bunch of the students decided to have a potluck dinner, which I went to socialize but not eat because I didn't have food to bring....I also don't get out of class until 8:00pm so there was no time for me to cook anything anyway.  Tonight a bunch of us are going to a free concert at the Acropolis (or as my art teacher calls it aCRAPolis =D ) Museum.  It is going to be a bunch of different pop/electro dj's so it should be a blast. Maybe I will have pictures.... Also, Wendy's (one of my apartmentmates) 21st birthday is on Monday so we are going to go out for her birthday tomorrow, so eventually I will have some social pictures instead of pictures of food.  Other than that, I have a butt load of homework to do.  I'm pretty sure I have more homework here than I do at Siena which is ridiculous because I'm a science major.... many kids feel this way though and I guess you just have to pick and choose which readings you think are important and skip the rest, of course my OCD/perfectionist self is not okay with this concept.  I'm such a fucking turd.....anyways hopefully I will have something interesting for you guys to look at soon....lol
That's it for now

The Collaboration

So Kailtyn and I have made a list of random things about Greece that is different from what we experience at home:
  • no microwaves
  • no toasters
  • no dryers
  • my apt is the only one with air conditioning ( thank God because Greece is having its hottest September and you know i sweat like a mofo)
  • Greeks double park like crazy....apparently there are no parking laws
  • they put 3 people on Vespa
  • men are not afraid to get close to each other or wear fanny packs
  • they don't always have chicken in the grocery stores
  • everything is closed on Sundays
  • sometimes shops don't reopen after siesta which is 2:30pm-5:30 everyday
  • Greece is the ONLY country in Europe without an Apple store
  • it's really expensive to fly out of or into Greece
  • children are out at all hours of the night a lot of time without supervision
  • shit tons of stray dogs and cats
  • stray dogs will follow you....4 dogs followed me and Kaitlyn yesterday for 10 minutes
  • your feet are always dirty
  • store owners clean the sidewalks....but they're still dirty
  • no form of baking soda, baking powder, or vanilla for baking (this makes me very sad)
That's all I have to say for today <3

Finally Got My Sandals!

We don't have classes on Friday so eventually we can travel if we would like.  So yesterday we went to the open air market, visited the stadium, went to Syntagma and Monastraki and did some shopping.  The poet is a custom sandal maker.  You go in and pick out a style of sandal and if you like it, they fit it to your foot.

The Above pictures are of the Stadium

We also went on a little nature walk near the stadium, where we caught two turtles in the act
(pictured below left)
This is rose creeping on an aloe plant (above right)

This is the view from near the stadium

We then walked through the National Gardens.  The pictures below are from this walk.  The pictures of the building below is the Zappion which is the Congress Hall

The picture below is of the Zappion ceiling

These are some random photos of statues within the park....and rose in front of the statue (pictured right)

The below pictures are random pictures of parts of the actual gardens

This ends the pictures of the Gardens and the pictures below are of Syntagma and Manastraki

Finally! Pictured below is the Poet (the Sandal Maker of Athens)

And that's all! There will be more pictures on facebook, Kaitlyn also has a photo of me getting my sandals fitted.  And now I have a crap load of homework to do....

Send Me Your Recipes!

So this week was the first week of classes, boring stories not much to tell there.  This was also really our first week here, meaning our first week of survival.  Coming back from the islands on Sunday sucked because all of the markets were closed, meaning I have no way of buying food, so I had to eat out.  I eventually went food shopping, 3 times in 2 days, and probably spent about 40 euro.  That food is now almost all gone.  I like to eat and now have nothing to cook, no recipes, so SEND me your recipes! Please! Also don't be afraid to comment and what not, let me know you're alive....but mainly send me your recipes.  I cooked a legitimate dinner twice for myself this week, which are pictured below, the rest of the nights I pretty much ate breakfast.  My attempt at fried eggplant was hilarious, definitely should have breaded with flour, I pretty much ate straight up olive oil.  Tonight I made myself caprese because i love mozzerella and tomatoes, it was fairly decent. As always salad and pasta are staples in my diet. I noticed I use a lot of butter, oil and salt....not very healthy. I'm defrosting chicken breasts currently so I can fry them later on today and freeze them for the rest of the week, because let me just say, being in class until 8:30 every night then coming home, making dinner, cleaning dishes, and doing homework is not at all fun.  Well the cooking would be fun if I had the right ingredients and time to enjoy it, but that's besides the point.  I'll probably do a bunch of cooking this weekend so I can eat during the week...I plan to make banana bread....nom nom nom, although I'm lost without chocolate chips.

Fried Eggplant.....

Caprese! nom nom
Anyways, tomorrow is Friday and I have no classes.  I'm going to the open air market (they happen twice a week) and hopefully venturing up to the national gardens, hanging in Syntagma for the day, and then, for a homework assignment, observing Greeks at a kafe. There will most likely be pictures to come, but in the mean time, send me your recipes!

My meal: Mussels Saganaki
Ben's Meal: Seafood Spaghetti
Rose, Lindsay, Kaitlyn and I decided to go on a walk, which ended up being at least a 5 mile walk through the island to beach Dragonera.  It was very hot and hilly, but an adventure.  We ate at a seafood restaurant that night.  I had mussels saganaki which ended up being mussels in a spicy sauce with cheese.  The saganaki part is supposed to be some sort of fried cheese with some sort of alcohol on top that is supposed to be lit on fire in front of you, that didn't happen, but regardless it was good.
